Well I got up at 5:30 today to make sure that I had time to get to the polls before rushing into work on an a previously scheduled off day. Oh well the life of an admin. Given the massively long lines shown by broadcast news, I was expecting wait time similar to Best Buy during the after Thanksgiving sales. Actually, however, it wasn’t bad. The total time, from the moment I walked in, to when I received my little “I Voted” sticker was roughly 30 minutes.
While standing in line however, there were still complaints about how long the process was taking. I was slightly annoyed at best. How can you complain about 30 minutes of your life helping to ensure that our nation maintains it stance as the strongest and freest on the planet? These same people have probably spent near that amount of time waiting outside the restroom during halftime of our local NFL team. Those thirty minutes are your duty. Many men and women have and are dying defending you. Our way of paying them back for their sacrifices is by spending a few minutes out of our lives selecting who will run this nation for the next 4 years.
Also, if you are thinking about not voting; that is worse than complaining about how long it is taking. Whether you vote Obama or McCain, you are making your voice heard. As a society, we are not all going to agree on who leads our nation. That is fine, that is what makes this nation great. Look at Iraq and take out your feelings about the war. Depending on what religious affiliations they have, depends on their standing in the country. Here, our religious beliefs do not dictate our national direction. Our political affiliations, while providing some fun impromptu meetings over the coffee machine, do not dictate where, who we can interact with and ultimately, whether we live or die.
So whether you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent; realize that by voting, you are doing your part to ensure that this nation continues to be the greatest nation on the planet.
